Tesco Blanc de Noirs Champagne

Tesco Blanc de Noirs Champagne (Tesco Champagne)

Tesco Champagne

Here at Libation, we are always open to new ideas, new brands, wondrous exclusivity, and yes, believe it or not the supermarket own brand. It is, we find, an often overlooked member of the champagne family tree, however, miss out at your peril.

Tesco are leading the way with their hard-to-choose-from range of champagnes, there is something for everyone here. On this occasion, we opted for the Blanc de Noirs, made form 100% point noir grapes, and made, we noticed, by Chassenay Darce, a bona fide champagne house. Fear not, someone at Tesco has done their research when making this.

The bottle tries hard with an ornate gold label that has a fancy black border, for the wine snobs out there. The word 'Tesco' does appear writ large on the label, and whilst we are here, one taster did note that they would have liked to have seen the nice beige colour from the neck appear also on the main label and on the capsule, which was a disappointing generic type; you can't please everyone though. The foil was good and sturdy though.

The champagne itself is of a gentle, pale gold and boasts a crowd-pleasing, big white foamy top, every time we poured it. It is immensely sparkling and remains so to the very last drop.

Its aroma is quite sweet and has a distinct hint of blueberries to it; surprising? Wait till you taste it. You are treated to a barrage of thyme, creamy lemon and liquorice. Each flavour holding its own, not in a complex way; it is what it is. We can say with a high level of confidence, all tasters came away surprised and pleased.

This humble bottle belies a great secret. This champagne is like savouring a fine lemon cheesecake. First of all you taste subtle hints of lemon fluff on the top, then you are rewarded with a tantalising biscuit base. A shame it got marked down on poor bottle continuity and a lack lustre cork.

Good news though is that there may be more on the shelves of Tesco for those in the know to enjoy! - KT
