Well, here it is, the Sainsbury’s answer to Tesco’s "A Carpentier" and us at Libation never being too choosy when it comes to supermarkets, so let’s give it a whirl.
Nice rich gold tone label, although one taster said it was flat and monotone, though the black text lifts it somewhat. There ‘s a nice ‘ED’ on the bottle neck however overall, there’s just the two colours: black and gold – not quite up to those other proponents of black and gold: a Chanel handbag, but at least they’re making an effort. Oh-uh – it’s the high street capsule lurking beneath, just plain silver – they should have made it gold!
Aroma: mmm nice, elderflowers, blossom and a bit fruity.
Taste: eh? There is no taste! Really! No discernable, dominant flavours at all, just a clean tasting and not very demanding sensation. You get the fizz at first but that’s all. It’s very light and totally inoffensive.
Oddly, it has a fine mousse. Perhaps without it, it would just taste of fresh air? We decided this was a Champagne for sports people, to carry in their kit instead of Lucozade as it’s very refreshing. Actually, it would be good for cocktails. As the bottle progressed, we got a slight hint of raspberry sharpness and something a bit grapey, a bit golden delicious. One taster detected savoury notes, going as far as saying it had a hint of soy sauce!
We have marked it down because: It’s not too taxing, a bit watery, has a lacklustre capsule and they really must try harder. Although now we have been spoilt and it has ultimately made us crave a better Champagne. - KT
