Billecart Salmon Blanc De Blancs Champagne
Billecart Salmon Champagne
Now, here’s a bottle that doesn’t give much away and we here at Libation love a good mystery, so it was an obvious choice for a Bank Holiday tipple.
Its label has an abstract ‘BS’ design – must have been an interesting meeting around that table when the designers were toying with how to use a ‘b + s’ and not make it rude! It’s quite an 80s bottle really, with all that silver and white – nothing wrong with that though, in fact, one taster got their MP3s out and put on the theme music to Miami Vice to enable them to focus more clearly on the task in hand...
Nice cork! With the name on both top, bottom and side and a coat of arms regalia on the top of the outer foil and here’s the old ‘bs’ on the capsule, nice continuity. In the glass it is a very nice pale straw in colour.
Its aroma conjured up grassy knolls, faint floral freshness and a hint of sharp greenery.
Now to taste: oohhh, interesting! Earthy, truffly, mushroomy and arbrous – how intriguing! Good acidity with hints of fresh lemon sorbet burst froth from its foamy head.
As the tasting progressed, so did the pleasant lemony notes grow too, developing into a more grapefruit and subtly citrus blend with hints of PLJ cordial. Then came the apples – plenty of them too, green ones, smoother than a granny smith though not as sweet as a golden delicious.
This Champagne packs a big flavour punch, not an in your face one, but a kind of tickle on the taste buds. Very moreish. - KT
