Champagne exports to the UK rose by 4% in 2005 to almost 37m bottles, according to data released by the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC).
The figures meant the UK was Champagne’s largest export market for the tenth year in succession.
The CIVC also pointed to a strong increase in UK sales of Rosé Champagne, which saw shipments grow by 5%, while sales of Vintage Champagne were also buoyant, rising by 7.3%.
The CIVC said that sales growth had also been observed in larger bottle sizes such as Magnums, Jeroboams, Nebuchadnezzars.
“Britons are known as great lovers of celebration and this year we’ve seen a new trend as export figures show a dramatic increase in large-sized bottles, injecting a sense of fun to those occasions,” said Françoise Peretti, director for the Champagne Information Bureau in the UK.
